Just like your car, your air conditioning system needs little love from time to time. Take for example, the condensate drain. This drain works to remove the condensate that forms as our air conditioning systems remove excess moisture from the air. When the condensate drain is working properly, the excess moisture should drain outside via the condensate drain. However, sometimes the drain becomes clogged and needs a little TLC. Fortunately, cleaning the condensate drain is relatively simple. Even better, clean the condensate drain can be done with something you probably already have at home: vinegar. Learn how below.
How to Tell if Your Condensate Drain Line Is Clogged
Our air conditioning systems have two jobs: producing cool air and dehumidifying it. As your AC dehumidifies the air, condensate should be directed outdoors via the condensate drain. This means that whenever your air conditioning system is in use, there should be water dripping from the condensate drain. The condensate drain is a PVC pipe typically located outside near the compressor, attached to a wall of your home. If you locate the drain and find the absence of a slow drip, the drain likely clogged.
If you find the condensate line is clogged, it’s important to clear the clog right away. A clogged condensate drain can cause bacteria and algae growth, which can cause the drain pan to overflow and damage your home.
How to Unclog Your AC Drain Line Using Vinegar
Fortunately, cleaning a clogged condensate drain is simple and can be done using a common household product. All you will need is a few minutes of your time and some regular distilled vinegar.
1. First, locate the drain line.
2. Remove the drain line plug and pour in ¼ cup of distilled vinegar. Vinegar kills algae, but keep in mind that it may take a few hours to remove the clog if it is severe.
3. Repeat monthly to keep your condensate drain free of clogs.
